SPACE UNGANA GHANA IDEAFEST

July 20 @ 08:00 17:00

Celebrating International Moon Day, July 20, 2024
Space Ungana Ideafest to be held at the Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory
Accra, Ghana – July 20, 2024 —

The Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory (GRAO) joins the global celebration of International Moon Day (IMD)  an event dedicated to fostering worldwide engagement in lunar science and exploration, since 2022.   The IMD Ideafest is a key element of Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI) vision and mission to educate Ghana’s populace about the benefits of space science and technology for achieving the SDGs, as well as in ensuring Ghana has a seat at the table as humanity seeks to be a spacefaring civilization.   GSSTI Director Dr Joseph Bremang Tandoh, eloquently stated in his submission to the UN Pact For the Future, “Let us be the generation that reaches for the stars and uses their light to illuminate a more prosperous, peaceful, and food-secure world”.

With a vision to inspire and educate space enthusiasts of all ages, the GSSTI is coordinating a series of exciting activities throughout the day, at the GRAO which is located at Kununtse, a suburb of Accra.  Ghana, being situated almost at the Center of the world is ideally located to view both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, and explains why Ghana was selected at the second country in Africa (after South Africa)  to host a radio telescope and thus bring a new phase of astronomy into the country.   Furthermore, the observatory serves as a training centre for students from the other AVN partner countries (Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique and Kenya).

The Ideafest is being organized in collaboration with various organizations active in Ghana’s space advocacy community.  These include: Promoting Radio Astronomy in Ghana through School visits and Astronomy Clubs (PRAGSAC), Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers ( IEEE) Ghana, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE} Ghana and SGAC (Space Generation Advisory Council).

Event Calendar:

  • 9:00 AM:  Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory Opens for Free Tours All Day
  • 9:30 AM: PRAGSAC Hackathon – A creative and competitive event where participants will develop innovative solutions related to lunar exploration and research.
  • 4:00 PM:  IEEE and NSBE Ghana Lightning Talks –  Experts from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers Ghana will deliver short, insightful talks about life on the moon and the technological advancements needed for sustained lunar presence.
  • 5:00 PM: SGAC Debate – The Space Generation Advisory Council will facilitate a debate on the future of lunar exploration, featuring young professionals and students.
  • 6:00 PM MoonShine Dahlin Storytelling: International Moon Day Ambassador Dr Claire Nelson, Forbes 50 Female Futurist, will present excerpts from her one woman show Moon Runnings: The Road to Navrongo, captivating lunar-themed story, engaging audiences with tales of her life as the first Jamaican on the Moon.
  • 7:00 PM: Skywatch – Attendees can enjoy an evening of stargazing, observing the moon and other celestial bodies through telescopes with guidance from astronomers.

This event is free and open to space enthusiasts of all ages, providing a unique opportunity to learn about and celebrate lunar science. Join us for a day of discovery and inspiration as we look to the moon and beyond.
