SUMMARY:Protecting Lunar Heritage: Developing Guidelines and Recommendations for Controlled Lunar Deorbiting
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the impact of the Soviet probe Luna 2\, the first artificial object to reach the Moon\, the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Aerospace Heritage proposes an event dedicated to the protection of lunar archaeological heritage\, with particular attention to the risks posed by the impacts of de-orbited satellites and rocket stages.\nThe Moon preserves the material remains of dozens of space missions conducted since 1959\, documenting humanity’s earliest interactions with another celestial body. Although the lunar environment has favoured their preservation\, these sites are becoming increasingly vulnerable due to natural weathering processes and the growing number of exploration and commercial activities.\nAs lunar traffic increases\, controlled crash landings of orbiters and rocket stages are becoming an increasingly attractive and potentially sustainable end-of-mission disposal strategy. However\, the degree to which such impacts can be effectively controlled remains uncertain\, as controlled lunar impacts have not yet been established as a sustained and consistently reliable practice. Moreover\, high-velocity regolith ejecta generated by these impacts may damage or contaminate lunar areas requiring particular protection. These include historical heritage sites associated with past lunar exploration and natural areas of special scientific or logistic significance\, including the polar regions (>75°N/S)\, which contain water-ice deposits of strategic importance; the equatorial zone\, which hosts a major concentration of near-side heritage and may support future launch infrastructure; the lunar maria\, which are of interest for both in-situ resource utilisation and radio-quiet astronomy; the South Pole–Aitken Basin\, which is of particular scientific interest for understanding the stratigraphy of the deep mantle and contains the Chang’e 4 and Chang’e 6 sites of historical activity; and other scientifically significant formations\, such as lobate scarps\, lunar pits\, magnetic anomalies\, and Copernican-age craters. Impact ejecta may also threaten existing operational infrastructure\, including\, for example\, the Lunar Laser Ranging Retroreflectors.\nTo address these challenges\, the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Aerospace Heritage\, which is actively engaged in the study and protection of aerospace heritage\, is drafting guidelines and recommendations for controlled lunar crash landings. These are intended to provide expert technical advice to inform consensus-based decision-making within COPUOS and to support the future development of international standards and policies.\nThe event will introduce the Committee and its activities\, provide an overview of lunar heritage\, the threats to its preservation and the current legal framework\, and conclude with a presentation of the Committee’s ongoing work\, including preliminary recommendations for the safe management of controlled lunar crash landings. \nProtecting Lunar Heritage: Developing Guidelines and Recommendations for Controlled Lunar Deorbiting\nMonday\, 14 September 2026\, 14.00 – 16.00 (CEST) \n🇺🇸 Los Angeles – 5:00–7:00 AM; 🇺🇸 Denver – 6:00–8:00 AM; 🇺🇸 Chicago – 7:00–9:00 AM; 🇺🇸 New York – 8:00–10:00 AM; 🇧🇷 Brasília – 9:00–11:00 AM; 🇬🇧 London – 1:00–3:00 PM; 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇮🇹 Paris / Berlin / Rome – 2:00–4:00 PM; 🇿🇦 Johannesburg – 2:00–4:00 PM; 🇹🇷 Istanbul – 3:00–5:00 PM; 🇦🇪 Dubai – 4:00–6:00 PM; 🇮🇳 New Delhi – 5:30–7:30 PM; 🇹🇭 Bangkok – 7:00–9:00 PM; 🇨🇳 Beijing – 8:00–10:00 PM; 🇸🇬 Singapore – 8:00–10:00 PM; 🇯🇵 Tokyo – 9:00–11:00 PM; 🇰🇷 Seoul – 9:00–11:00 PM; 🇦🇺 Sydney – 11:00 PM–1:00 AM (+1); 🇳🇿 Auckland – 1:00–3:00 AM (+1)

SUMMARY:COAST: Commercial CisLunar Orbital Amateur Asstronaut Space Tourism
DESCRIPTION:Midterms in the Fall 2026 USC Astro Studio\nFall 2026 Topic Focus – COAST: Commercial CisLunar Orbital Amateur Astronaut Space Tourism\nThe International Space Station is set for decommission at the end of this decade. The current US policy has a mandate to include Space Tourism in the facility manifest before retirement. The Artemis II mission has proven the capability of the SLS and Orion spacecraft to safely carry crew and return them safely back to Earth. And the advanced SLS evolution program\, the Commercial LEO Destinations and the Lunar Gateway program are all being revised and reconfigured to align with administration’s lunar return expediency mandate. NASA contracts\, not focused on expediency are being terminated or reassigned.\nThe USC graduate Astro Studio COAST project recommends a phased approach to permanent lunar development\, minimizing long term development and low Technological Readiness Level (TRL) elements in favor of flight certified and flight ready elements or those at high Operational Readiness Level (ORL).\nA Cislunar Cycler architecture has been proposed as a sturdy framework to support lunar logistics\, and celestial mechanics allows the International Space Station to be a prominent element this proposed COAST concept architecture. It is possible for space tourists to visit the ISS\, and as celestial alignment occurs\, to depart and return from lunar orbit. Lunar surface activities can evolve from this open architecture providing ample time for lunar surface infrastructure elements to mature and be certified for human operations on the Moon.\nThis 21st century paradigm shift at NASA from one-off programs and projects like Apollo and ISS is what differentiates the permanent lunar return effort underway\, and this COAST project offers a catalyst architecture to set a sturdy foundation to accomplish this complex task

SUMMARY:Run a Lunar Mission Together: An Open-Source Hands-On Session at IAC 2026
DESCRIPTION:One Moon\, one vision\, one future. \nJoin the LunCo team for a hands-on session on lunar surface operations\, held alongside the 77th International Astronautical Congress. We start with a live simulated landing at the lunar south pole\, a study model of a planned commercial lander-and-rover mission built from public data. Then it’s your turn: take the controls of a rover\, look inside how the lander and rover are modelled\, and plan a route across real lunar terrain data\, on your own laptop or together with a team. \nLunCoSim is an open-source (Apache-2.0) simulation environment for space mission engineering. It is currently in alpha\, and this session is built around your feedback. The last part of the evening is an open discussion: what you would need from a tool like this\, what you would leave out\, and what should come next. What we hear will shape what we build. \nProgramme (about 90 minutes):\nA live lunar landing\, and how the simulation is put together\nHands-on: drive\, explore and plan\, alone or in teams\nOpen feedback session: what you need\, what’s missing\, what should come next \nNo prior experience with LunCoSim or simulation software is needed. Students\, researchers\, engineers\, architects and educators are all welcome. Bring a laptop if you have one; if not\, you can join a team at a shared machine. Registered participants receive the download link and practical details before the session. \nLunCoSim is free to download\, runs on an ordinary laptop\, and needs no account or licence\, so you can keep using it afterwards.

SUMMARY:Mater Temporis: Lunar Manifestations of Terrestrial Art
DESCRIPTION:Mater Temporis: Lunar Manifestations of Terrestrial Art is an international online panel organised by Moon Village Centre Bulgaria. \nThe panel advances a central proposition: that the Moon is humanity’s primordial temporal regulator\, the origin of the calendar\, and the organiser of sacred time across civilisations. The drive to return to the Moon is not purely technological. Lunar art is the most honest expression of why humanity wants to go back. \nThe discussion moves across three registers: the deep cultural and mythological roots of lunar symbolism; the role of contemporary space art in articulating what exploration means beyond technical achievement; and the materialisation of this arc in artworks that have physically left Earth and entered orbit. \nJoin at: https://meet.jit.si/MaterTemporis2026(No registration needed) \nConfirmed panelists:Luis Bernardo Guzmán\, Radix Lucis Studio (UK)Christopher Cokinos\, Moon Village Association (USA)Remo Rapetti\, Moon Village Association (Italy)Anna Sitnikova\, Moon Gallery Foundation (Netherlands)Annick Bureaud\, Art critic and curator (France)Marcus Neustetter\, Artist and Space Art Practitioner (South Africa) \nModerated by Dr. Ivelina Kadiri\, Moon Village Centre Bulgaria
