The lecture will be conducted by MSA Founder – Gary Andreassen. Joining him in the panel discussion are representatives from the space sector in the Philippines.  \n\n\n\nThe targeted panel are representatives from the following:  \n\n\n\n\nSpace Generation Advisory Council (confirmed) \n\n\n\nStudents for the Exploration and Development of Space – Philippines (TBA) \n\n\n\nMoon Village Association (TBA) \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis events focus will on why it is necessary to explore and return to the Moon\, especially given that many individuals continue to point to the problems on Earth when discussing space exploration. Concerns by the public regarding its relevance can be addressed by properly communicating the necessity for continued exploration and study\, as well as the benefits from doing so. The current efforts as well as the direct and indirect benefits should also be communicated to increase awareness and understanding. In accordance to the 2022 theme Lunar Exploration Coordination and Sustainability\, the panel discussion brings together members of the space community in the Philippines. This will also help promote their respective organizations\, as well as provide an avenue for the exchange of ideas and concerns from their perspective as members of the space community. The panelist tapped are also from the youth and young adult demographic in order to inspire the next generation of space leaders in the country. The Philippines\, having only established a space agency in the recent years\, is fairly young and therefore would benefit from the growth of young professionals in the related STEM areas. Future involvement of Filipinos in efforts for lunar exploration can also offer political prestige\, and economic stimulus\, while contributing to the pursuit of scientific goals. \n\n\n\nWatch the recording\n\n\n\n\nRecording on facebook

David\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Film\n\n\n\nThe classic space artist\, Chesley Bonestell\, born in San Francisco in 1888\, had a special relationship with the Moon. It was the subject of some of his first published space art back in the 1940s and continued to figure in his art until his death in 1986. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to scores of paintings for nationally published magazines such as Life\, Bonestell contributed to books such as  The Conquest of Space\, Man and the Moon\, Rocket to the Moon\, Across The Space Frontier  and Conquest of the Moon. The latter was a spin-off of a series of articles on the future of space exploration created by Wernher von Braun and a team of experts for the popular magazine\, Collier’s. Its elaborate vision of a lunar expedition and lunar base—illustrated by Bonestell—has been widely credited with spurring the development of America’s fledgling space program. Bonestell’s contribution to immensely popular movies such as Destination Moon (1950) and the effect they had on the public perception of space travel cannot be discounted\, either. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBonestell was also almost single-handedly responsible for the popular impression of the Moon as being dominated by craggy\, Alpine-like peaks. While proven mistaken by the astronauts of the Apollo program\, there is a viable argument to made that Bonestell knew exactly what he was doing and had it not been for his dramatic renderings of the lunar landscape public enthusiasm and support for the exploration of the Moon would have been far less. \n\n\n\nBonestell’s artwork was ubiquitous throughout the 1940s and 1950s. It not only appeared everywhere\, from books and magazines to television and movies\, it influenced hundreds of other illustrators who spread the Bonestellian vision of the Moon and future spaceflight. His work even had a profound effect on the depiction of the Moon in Stanley Kubrick’s futuristic epic\, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). \n\n\n\n“Theophilus” (1944) by Chesley Bonestell\n\n\n\nThe award-winning film\, Chesley Bonestell: A Brush With the Future\, is the first-ever documentary about the “Father of Space Art.” It includes interviews with those who knew Mr. Bonestell or were influenced by his art. Featured in this film is rare commentary by author Ray Bradbury and Douglas Trumbull  (photographic effects supervisor for 2001\, A Space Odyssey) who explain how this extraordinary artist popularized the idea of traveling to the Moon\, exploring and colonizing it. Bonestell\, through his art\, helped lay the groundwork for not only our modern space program but for both public and official support and interest in exploring the Moon. SUMMARY:[USA - Canada] International Moon Day Tele - Robotics
DESCRIPTION:July 20\, Online\n\n\n\nThe United Nations approved the creation of the International Moon Day (IMD) as an annual educational\, cultural and scientific event. The International Moon Day is to be observed annually on 20 July to raise awareness among the public and generate support for sustainable Moon Exploration and Utilization. The International Moon Day encourages and promotes events around the globe on 20 July\, including community panel discussion\, lectures\, webinar\, concerts exhibits and screening of educational videos. \n\n\n\nThe Moon Village Exploration Analogues (MVA) Working Group (https://moonvillageassociation.org/technical-activities/exploration-analogues/  ) provides a forum for identifying and coordinating activities related to terrestrial analogues for the Moon Village. It also addresses the associated topic of the use of the Moon as an analogue/testbed for future exploration of Mars and other destinations. This Working Group will support the creation of Analogue test sites around the world as a tool to contribute to capacity building in space developing countries and in general as outreach to the public. \n\n\n\nIn order to support the International Moon Day (IMD) and demonstrate the leadership of the MVA\, the Moon Village Exploration Analogues (MVA) Working Group is organizing an International Moon Day Tele-Robotics event for schools and universities. In this event groups of up to 4 students from each institution can tele-operate a lunar rover prototype in Canada or Hawai’i\, USA from any location around the world. \n\n\n\nPartners\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION CLOSED\n\n\n\nThere are two groups that have graciously agreed to provide a robot and tele-operations software for the International Moon Day event on July 20\, 2022: \n\n\n\nMission Control Space Services  https://www.missioncontrolspaceservices.com/software/platform/ \n\n\n\n (Canada) The Mission Control Software platform empowers mission controllers working in distributed teams to command and monitor remote assets in space and on Earth. \n\n\n\nThe Mission Control Software platform is the operations powerhouse of Mission Control’s end-to-end solution. When combined with one or more of our applications\, the solution provides core mission functions such as: \n\n\n\n\nCommand\, control\, guidance\, and navigation of spacecraft\, planetary rovers\, surface and orbital robots\, payloads\, guidance and robotic systems\n\n\n\nAI-based data processing of payloads and imagery\n\n\n\nInterfaces with common space software frameworks and protocols\, such as CCSDS\, NASA cFS\, Cubesat\, and others\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFigure 1. The International MoonBase Alliance (IMA) is an association comprised of leading scientists\, educators\, and entrepreneurs from space agencies and industries worldwide to advance the development and implementation of an international base on the Moon. \n\n\n\nPISCES will provide the use of the HELELANI PLANETARY ROVER as a mobile testing platform for tele-robotic software and hardware systems. Named “Helelani” (Heavenly Travels)\, this 700-pound (318 kg) rover is outfitted with a suite of instruments and camera systems that can be controlled remotely via a handheld radio controller or through an internet connection from anywhere in the world. Helelani’s hardware and software systems are continually developed and refined. \n\n\n\nFigure 2. HELELANI Planetary Rover testing on a Hawaiian Volcano\n\n\n\nThe Moon Village Analogue (MVA) Working Group is organizing a tele-robotics event for the International Moon Day using the Helelani planetary rover. Each rover will be available for tele-operations from multiple sites across the globe in order to promote international collaboration and cooperation. \n\n\n\nTele-operations Schedule:\n\n\n\nSchools and Universities are invited to sign up below for a tele-robotics experience. Groups of 4 students can be accommodated in each hourly time slot. The sessions are limited to one hour per institution and the reservations are on a “first come – first served” basis. DESCRIPTION:July 20 & 23\, Online\n\n\n\nThe 2022 Lunar Development Conference will bring together our community of Lunar science and Lunar settlement advocates to discuss all aspects of the Moon in an all-virtual setting using the latest technologies and methods. We will feature speakers from the realms of Lunar science\, space policy\, advocacy\, business\, and academia who will present their research and ideas for the human future of Luna. All sessions will be streamed live and on the Moon Society YouTube channel. \n\n\n\nThis event will follow up on our successful 2020 and 2021 Lunar Development Conferences which brought together over three hundred attendees and over sixty speakers including CEOs\, professors\, business professionals\, legal and policy experts\, and a wide range of ideas and opinions. An elected Member of the International Academy of Astronautics\, Kerrie is a space historian\, curator\, educator and author and serves on several international committees on space history\, space education and space museums. She also lectures in Space Humanities at the International Space University. In 2020 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for her contribution to astronautics as a curator.  \n\n\n\nPartners in Space: Australian Involvement in Lunar Exploration  \n\n\n\nWhen Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon in July 1969\, an estimated global audience of 650 million watched the event live\, those historic images received from the Moon and broadcast to the world from Australia. As host nation to the to the largest number of NASA tracking stations outside the US\, Australian support for lunar exploration commenced with the early robotic explorers and continues to this day. Australian researchers also made important contributions to the Apollo Moon program. This presentation will provide a historical perspective on the Australian contribution to lunar exploration and its future role in the Artemis program.    \n\n\n\nNate Taylor  \n\n\n\nNate is a graduate in Applied Physics and Mathematics from the University of South Australia\, as well as an alumnus of the International Space University. He works as a Senior Programs and Operations Officer at the Australian Space Agency’s Australian Space Discovery Centre and is a founding member of the ISU Australia and New Zealand Alumni Association. Nate describes his own career pathway as an n-body problem; n>3\, having previously worked in a plethora roles ranging from carnival hand\, to finance manager before finally completing a burn towards the space industry after discovering his own desire to create moments where the wonder and potential of the cosmos are reflected in the eyes of others.  \n\n\n\nBecoming Lunar: Beyond Australia’s Footprint   \n\n\n\nWhen you think of Australia and the Moon\, what comes to mind? Fifty three years ago\, Australia played a crucial role in bringing to the world one of the most historic and awe inspiring images of all time as Neil Armstrong descended the ladder of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module\, bringing to life Russian space pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky’s belief that Humanity cannot remain in the cradle of the Earth. But Australia’s role in lunar activities is far from being relegated to the past\, and Tsiolkovsky’s prediction that our moral and ethical sense will be elevated by expanding into space\, is yet to be realised. Cue\, Artemis. NASA’s Artemis Programme aims to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon by the end of the decade\, but this time\, an invigorated and robust Australian space industry is not only primed to go along for the ride\, but to forge ahead beyond Australia’s footprint. \n\n\n\nJames Brown  \n\n\n\nJames Brown is the CEO of the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA)\, Australia’s peak body for the space economy. A national security and public policy expert\, he has previously held research appointments at the Lowy Institute for International Policy\, United States Studies Centre\, and the University of Sydney. He is currently a Non-Resident Fellow at the United States Studies Centre\, Chairman of the charity Veteran Sports Australia\, and a strategic adviser to the University of Technology Sydney. Between 2017 and 2019 James led the rebuilding and modernisation of Australia’s largest veteran’s organisation\, the RSL\, as its youngest ever elected President. He served on the board of the Sydney Invictus Games and led the campaign to establish the National Commission for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention. He is a former Army officer with service in Iraq\, Afghanistan\, and the Solomon Islands. James is a regular media contributor on foreign policy and defence issues and has authored two books on Australian defence policy. He is based in Sydney.  \n\n\n\nKEYNOTE: Michelle L.D. Hanlon   \n\n\n\nA space lawyer\, Michelle is Co-Director of the University of Mississippi’s Air and Space Law Program and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Space Law\, the world’s oldest law journal dedicated to the legal problems arising out of human activities in outer space.  She is a Co-Founder and President of For All Moonkind\, Inc.\, a nonprofit that is the only organization in the world focused on protecting human cultural heritage in outer space.  For All Moonkind has been recognized by the United Nations as a Permanent Observer to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.    \n\n\n\nProtecting Historic Achievements as a Foundation for Lunar Governance  \n\n\n\nThe 1967 Outer Space Treaty and its progeny contain many gray areas\, gaps and even internal inconsistencies. The lacuna generates much uncertainty regarding State and private rights in respect of lunar activity. As humanity prepares to return to the Moon\, conflict feels inevitable. Increased activity will test the principles of the Outer Space Treaty and particularly challenge its gaps and inconsistencies. This presentation will show that the best way forward is to look to the past and recall our kindred moments. Recognizing and protecting cultural heritage in outer space is the foundational step to successful and sustainable lunar governance.

SUMMARY:[Pakistan] Mastruk Jagek (Observing the Moon)
DESCRIPTION:July 20\, Online\n\n\n\nCelebrating the first IMD2022 – International Moon Day and also this is going to be the first astronomical cultural heritage preserving event in Pakistan. \n\n\n\nThis indigenous tradition of Kalasha meteorological and astronomical knowledge system and practice – was enacted predominantly in the Hindu Kush mountain range. Mastruk Jagek based on the observation of the moon\, and shadows or phases of the moon with respect to the local topography. The system is a complex structure of empirically observed knowledge and is repeatedly referenced to allow the Kalasha indigenous people of Asia to predict the appropriate time for sowing seeds\, animal husbandry and natural calamities. It is also used to govern the Kalasha calendar by determining the dates of important social events\, festivals\, feasts\, and religious ceremonies. SUMMARY:[Kuwait] Analogue Missions and Arts – Space Enthusiasts from Kuwait Update
DESCRIPTION:July 23\, Online\n\n\n\nA group of artists from Kuwait will perform an analog mission at the Analog Astronaut Training Center. The primary objective of the mission is to preform art work on the outer surface of habitat that is under construction. Artists will try to express how they feel due to isolation on their arts. The mission is planned for August 2022. Before the event\, an exhibition will be organized showing the artworks before experiencing isolation. During the mission\, artists will have the freedom to modify their arts due to the new experience of isolation. \n\n\n\nThe IMD event aims to show the public the artworks before performing the mission. This will involve the artist to describe how it feels before an analog mission for the first time.
